Most states allow this as long as school doesn’t interfere with you looking for a full time job.

Good Question. In California:

The California Unemployment Insurance Code has no provisions expressly rendering students, as such, unavailable for work. However, an inference of unavailability for work does arise when a claimant is attending school during hours customarily worked in business and industry.

Correct – i got to school at night but I still collect unemployment as long as I’m still actively looking for work.

you can go to school and collect unemployment because going to school is considered job training. in georgia, you have to physically turn in an unemployment certification with the teacher and/or advisor’s signature.

I’m currently collecting unemployment in CA. I’m an unemployed teacher since last year (June 2009). It is extremely unlikely that I will be offered full-time work in the near future. Here is my dilema . . . I want to take a 3 week training course in the medical field that is offtered during the day to change career paths. The only work I MIGHT be offered is substitute teaching. I cannot afford to jeopardize my unemployment though. Any thoughts?
