There are many ways to deal with being unemployed. Most are positive, but the news carries daily horror stories of persons who cannot handle this situation. So, it is important to become pro-active. Under the positive category, the first thing a person should do is assess their financial situation. Gather up all the information you have on debts, and expenses. Create a list, that will become a budget, if you do not already have one. You will need to know how much money you have on hand currently, and how much money you absolutely need monthly. Cut expenses!
Next step, file for unemployment. In most cases, if your being unemployed is no fault of your own, you will qualify quickly, and without delay. You can expect to begin receiving checks within a few weeks of your last day at work. In the meantime, you are expected to seriously look for another job. Make job seeking a full time job, and find something. You can work some part time jobs and still get full or partial unemployment benefits to help out.
Revise your resume, update it, and make it a big positive statement about your skills and abilities, especially if you have been a job hopper. Skills and abilities are important, but employers also look at your track record for longevity on jobs. Use the unemployment office job help, watch the ads, check on the internet, and network with friends. Start up a small independent business online, sell items on eBay, have yard sales, and sell on consignment. Do whatever you can to produce income while unemployed.
If you need new job skills, this is the ideal time to gain them. Your local unemployment agency can assist you with retraining and learning computer skills. Look for other benefits you can obtain, such as assistance with housing, rent, vehicle payments, utility bills, and other agencies that can help such as food banks, and emergency assistance agencies. You can find these with help from the unemployment agency, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or local churches for starters.
Keep it in your mind all the while that this is a temporary situation, and you can end up better off than before. Maintain a positive attitude, but be sure you put your full attention and energy into finding work. It is not vacation time on the government. Being unemployed is an ideal time to look at your life, your job skills, and make positive changes. It is important to not procrastinate, because time flies and benefits end.
