Dealing with Unemployment

We’ve all heard it, and many of us have been through it – “everything was going great, until I lost my job!”. Unemployment is without a doubt one of the most frustrating experiences that one can go through, especially if you have to worry about supporting more than just yourself. The key thing to remember, though, is that like most things in life, unemployment is only temporary. That said, here are a few tips that will hopefully shorten your stint of unemployment.

First off, don’t panic. Many people find themselves jobless and immediately let anxiety take hold. Sure, it can be scary not to know where your next rent check is going to come from, but panicking will only delay the situation and make things worse. The most important thing to do when stricken with unemployment is to devise a sound, well thought out plan to get yourself back on track. Instead of worrying about how you’re going to go about looking for a new job, make a list of places that you might enjoy working at and gather information as to whether or not they are hiring at the moment. Remember, the most important thing about finding a new job is to be satisfied with what you’re doing. Otherwise, you’ll be jumping from a job you hate to another job you hate every other month.

Next, spend an entire day visiting employment agencies. This can be frustrating, as often times the application process is quite lengthy and repetitive, but the fact is that employment agencies have helped the jobless get back on their feet time and time again. Apply at at least three different agencies, as it can take a while for each one to find you work. And remember to always check back once a week to make sure you stay at the top of their list.

Most importantly, don’t give up. It can be unbelievably frustrating to spend day after day applying for different jobs without getting a single call back, and often times this is what happens. Many people who experience this will take a break from searching for employment after even a few days of looking, just because they feel as if it’s not doing them any good. This is the wrong attitude to adapt; you have to keep looking, no matter what! In the end, your persistence will pay off, and you’ll find yourself in a much better spot than you are now.

Always remember that everyone has to go through experiences like this – it’s what gives us the right to call ourselves adults. Consider this a learning experience, take everything in stride, and everything will pan out just fine.
