In order to expedite the process, it is important to have a few of the required documents on hand prior to filling out the application, phoning or going to an office. With that said, before you do anything check with your local unemployment office about which way is best to file for unemployment. In New York and surrounding areas you may be able to file for unemployment by phone or online, but you may also have to go to the office in person, so a quick check is important.
Once you have determined how you can file for unemployment, the next step is obtaining the paper work or calling the unemployment office. As I mentioned earlier, you will need several items in order to complete your unemployment application. Of your personal effects, you will need a current mailing address, phone number and a driver’s license or military status paper if applicable. From your previous employer you will need the name, phone number and address of your previous employer as well as the company’s federal ID number which you can find on your W2 form or pay stub. Once you have collected all of these items, make notes of the dates when you started and finished your employment and how much you earned. If you were employed at your previous job for less than two years, you will also need the above information for your prior employers going back to two years ago.
Perhaps one of the most crucial pieces of information that people sometimes feel embarrassed about is the cause of their termination. Whether it was company downsizing or you were fired for not doing a good job, it is crucial that you tell the truth when you file for unemployment. In today’s harsh economic time the government wants to save as much money as possible, and they will be checking every detail of your unemployment application to make sure that they must pay you. If you lie on this or any part of your application the government will almost certainly not approve your application. So remember, when filing for unemployment, be truthful, because the only one who will be hurt when you lie, is you.
