In California and surrounding areas, the unemployment rate is rising daily. If you haven’t been laid off then you probably know several people who have. Not having a steady source of income can be a frightening experience; just surviving is expensive let alone paying off car loans and credit cards. However, for those people who have lost their jobs and do not have any income there is help available. We are blessed to live in a country that, despite turbulent times, still takes care of its needy citizens with great unemployment benefits. Now most people probably don’t think that the unemployment benefits available to them in New York and surrounding areas, will be of very much help, but those people are wrong. Many people think that filling out endless amounts of paperwork and waiting in line is what awaits them if they attempt to collect any unemployment benefits, but they are wrong as well. Due to this recession, in California and surrounding areas, it has never been easier to obtain unemployment benefits.
If you are laid off with a large group of people you will most likely receive instructions on how to file from unemployment from your company. On the other hand, if you are laid off with a small group of people or do not receive any instructions then there is a general format on how to go about applying for your unemployment benefits.
Before you can apply for unemployment benefits, it is important to know who and who cannot receive unemployment benefits. The requirements range from state to state but generally anyone who has been laid off for any reason other than their own doing, such as being fired, can file for unemployment benefits. Along with people whom have been fired from their jobs; people whom were temporary, part time or self employed do not qualify. If you meat all of these requirements then you can begin the process of filing for unemployment benefits.
The process is defined by what state you live in but in general, most states allow you to file for unemployment benefits online, but some states still use automated telephone systems. To complete the application process you will most likely be asked to provide a phone number, mailing address, driver’s license number, a short explanation of why you were terminated, if you are physically able to still work, your earnings at your previous job and whether you are actively seeking employment. It is absolutely imperative that you tell the truth through out the application process or else your application will be denied. Once you have submitted your request for unemployment benefits, it will generally take a week for the state to let you know if you qualify. Once you receive your approval, do not stop looking for a job. Unemployment benefits are meant to merely provide support between jobs and are not intended to be a supplement for a full time job.
