You do not list it on your resume, but the most important skill an employee can have is being indispensable. If you are that person that is ready, willing, and able, you will get the job and keep it. The dismal state of the economy and job market make it even more important to understand how powerful this can be. The following six simple steps can place a spotlight on you and your importance to the company:
Work Hard
This may seem so obvious, but how many people do you work with that only give sixty percent of their effort? Working hard means giving every job and project your complete attention, energy, and ability. It is what defines a good employee. Your diligence and work ethic will get you noticed.
Be a Know-it-All
More and more employers are asking their employees to do the jobs of two to three people. The ability to cross over into other areas or departments is key to staying out of the unemployment line. Take advantage of company sponsored training, learn new software and skills that expand your ability to perform any task you are given.
Be Prepared
Time management and organization are qualities every valuable employee has. Being on time for work, meeting deadlines and being ready to present your ideas hinge on being prepared. This could be as simple as having everything ready the night before or mapping out the details for a big presentation the day it is assigned.
Be Open to Change
Make your motto “Change is good”. Accepting changes without whining or anger tells your boss that you understand it is necessary, even if it is not easy. This attitude not only keeps you positive, but lessens work place drama by putting the brakes on negative water cooler discussions.
Be a Team Player
The best companies are run by teams, not individuals. This is because most jobs require multiple layers of knowledge and skills, along with hours of time and energy. Being able to work with others shows you are putting the company goals first.
Be Positively Positive
No one wants to work with a grump, regardless of their abilities. A negative attitude brings down the entire team and does nothing to improve the company. An employee with a positive outlook is more efficient and productive.
All of these tips are simple. They have the ability to change how you view your job and how you are viewed by your boss. Make yourself standout by being a positive and open employee that believes in hard work and teamwork. You will be rewarded!
